Keep the lights, heat, and fridge on with an Emergency Backup Generator for Your Home
A whole-home backup generator turns a multi-day Utah power outage into a non-event. The unit sits quietly outside your home, watches the utility power, and the moment the grid drops it starts itself, transfers your home over through an automatic transfer switch, and keeps everything running. Furnace, AC, fridge, sump, well pump, lights, internet. All until utility power is restored.
We've installed whole-home generators across Salt Lake, Tooele, Davis, and Utah counties. The Wasatch Front gets the full menu of outage causes: winter snowstorms that drop trees on lines, summer wind events that wipe out neighborhoods, and the occasional ice storm. A properly sized, properly installed standby generator means you don't notice any of it.

Standby Generator Questions
Whole-Home Generator FAQs for Utah Homeowners

Do I have to buy a Generac, or can I pick any brand?
Any brand. We are not a dealer for any single manufacturer, which means we have no incentive to push you toward one brand. Generac, Kohler, Cummins, Briggs & Stratton, Champion, Honeywell. Buy whichever unit fits your budget and aesthetic, and we install it cleanly and to code.
What size generator do I need for my Utah home?
Most Utah homes land between 18kW and 26kW for true whole-home backup. Smaller homes or critical-load setups (furnace, fridge, sump, well pump, a few outlets) can run as low as 10 to 14kW. We do a real load calculation on your panel before recommending a size. No guessing.
What's the difference between a standby and a portable generator?
A standby generator is permanently installed outside your home, runs on natural gas or propane, and turns on automatically through a transfer switch. A portable generator is a small gas-powered unit you roll out and start by hand, plugged into a few extension cords or a single inlet. Standby is hands-off and whole-home; portable is short-term and limited.
Do I need a transfer switch?
Yes. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is what safely connects the generator to your home's electrical system. It prevents backfeed into the utility grid (which can kill a lineman), and it's what makes the generator come on automatically. ATS installation is included in every whole-home install we do.
How long does installation take?
Most residential standby installs take 1 to 2 days of on-site work once permits, gas line, and the unit itself are ready. Total project timeline from first call to commissioned generator is usually 2 to 4 weeks depending on permitting and gas-line scheduling.
How much does a whole-home generator cost to install in Utah?
Properly installed, expect $9,000 to $18,000 all-in depending on home size, generator size, gas-line run, electrical complexity, and the unit you choose. We give a firm written quote after the on-site assessment, with no surprise charges.
Will it run on natural gas?
Yes. Natural gas is the most common fuel for Utah whole-home generators because most homes already have a gas line. Propane is a great option for homes off the gas grid. We coordinate fuel-line sizing with your plumber as part of the install.
Do you offer maintenance after the install?
Yes. We offer annual maintenance (oil change, filter swap, exercise-cycle verification, battery check, and a full system test) so the generator actually starts the day you need it. Generators that sit unmaintained for years often fail on the first real outage.
Will my generator power my AC and EV charger?
It can, if it's sized for it. Central AC, EV chargers, and electric water heaters are high-draw loads that affect generator sizing significantly. We factor every one of these into the load calculation so the system actually handles your whole home, not just the lights and fridge.
